Because there’s so few moving parts, electric cars don’t suffer routine break-downs, don’t need regular oil changes, etc, unlike gasoline cars. Electric vehicles are generally more reliable if only because of the fewer moving parts. It means much lower maintenance costs. Might electric vehicles be cheaper to own because you’re at the repair shop less often?

No oil changes, because there’s no oil to change. No gaskets to replace, no cylinder heads to machine, no spark plugs to replace, no valves to clog up, and on and on and on. Regenerative braking is less brake pad wear, and less frequent replacement.

Gasoline powered cars, on the other hand, seem like they’re designed to fail and therefore require maintenance. Maybe that’s why every car dealership has a repair shop out back? Trips to the repair shop cost you both time AND money.

Gasoline powered cars require oil changes every 3-5,000 miles, and routine replacement of other parts throughout the life of the car. Gasoline engines are complex and prone to breaking down, and there’s a large industry of companies devoted to car repair.

There's a lot to consider in maintenance costs, and as you can see below the two main sites for Total Cost of Ownership data don't agree on maintenance costs. What's common from all three estimates shown below is that ownership and maintenance costs are significant. But it's not clear how much an electric car saves in maintenance costs.

It seems the average oil change costs $45, with four of those a year that's almost $200 a year in savings on oil changes. Once you step inside Jiffy Lube they'll hit you up for other services on top of that, almost none of which are needed for electric cars.

According to a (newsroom.aaa.com) 2013 AAA press release the average maintenance costs for gasoline cars are:

Based on Driving 15,000 miles annually Small Sedan Medium Sedan Large Sedan Sedan Average SUV 4WD
Cost Per Mile 46.4 cents 61.0 cents 75.0 cents 60.8 cents 77.3 cents 65.3 cents
